Nariva Swamp
For this tour we head off to the East Coast of Trinidad and drive through miles of
Coconut Palm trees lining the road as it hugs the coast to various forest, costal
and wetland areas. If you wish we can start the day at dawn birding at Cumuto for
Red-Bellied Macaws. During the day we will bird alongside the Nariva and Otoire
Rivers where you will see fresh water wetland inhabitants Black-crested Antshrike,
Silvered Antbird, Woodcreepers, Gallinules, Marsh Tyrants, and if very lucky a
Green-Throated Mango. Several bridges along the way should produce many Flycatchers,
the Pygmy or Green Kingfisher. Nearby in the Palms you can see the Savanna Hawk, or
Pearl Kite, or if you are lucky you may see an Azure Gallinule in a pond on the roadside.
The final stop of the evening will be to look at noisy and unusual Red-bellied Macaws
roosting in large Moriche Palm Trees. If you have seen the Macaws at Cumuto we will head
off to Plum Mitan to see Limpkins, Herons, Bitterns and large flocks of Dickcissels when
they are there.
